Tonight I went to a concert that was part of the Endless Mountain Music Festival and this was one of the pieces performed. It was very dissonant and almost reminded me of heavy metal for some reason. I liked it. My wife hated it (when she heard this) after only hearing the first minute. What do you think?

Love it or hate it?

I am with your wife. Sounds like your cat Seamus got caught between the strings.

I guess I was just in the mood for some a little off-kilter last night. :)

I appreciate the skill involved in playing this piece, I just don’t like that kind of jagged, dissonant music.

Paul Hindemith is difficult. You either love him or hate his work. I used to hate playing his music in high school because the dissonance can be so difficult when playing. You automatically want to “fix” it!

So were you in the “hate it” camp? I take it you were. :)

I didn’t hate it. I can appreciate it for what it is – a challenging piece of music. There can be beauty in such dissonance, even though it can be a struggle to find it.
